Fellow Blackhorse troopers,
It is with great sadness that I write to you at this time.  Our dear friend Chuck Schmidt passed away on November 11, 2007, at approximately 11:11pm.  How fitting that a great soldier, leader and president of our organization would pass away on Veterans Day.  His wife Bonnie, son Garrett and daughter Jill were with him.
Chuck was diagnosed with cancer in mid June.  Surgery was not possible.  The prognosis was that it was not curable but it was treatable.  Chuck had one chemo treatment prior to the 11th ACVVC reunion in September.  Two weeks after the reunion Chuck developed an infection that spread throughout his body.  He was being treated for the infection and was recovering but unfortunately had a setback nearly two weeks ago.
I spoke with Chuck on Friday (11/09/07).  Several have talked with him recently including Ollie, Frank Cambria, Steve Page, Dave Tessier, Bill Suhre and several others.
Despite Chucks condition he still wanted to remain very much involved with this organization.  This was his life blood and his passion.  We tried to keep him up-to-date as often as possible.
A memorial service will be held in Colorado Springs with interment in his home town in North Dakota.  Final arrangements for date and time are being made.  We'
Chuck was a great leader, not only during his military career, but as the president of this organization.  He was also a friend to many.  We will miss him.
Till we meet in Fiddlers Green......
